Aromas in antiquity
For Europeans the East symbolized exotic dancers who dance in front of a sultan who is sitting on a floor and smoking a hookah. All room is filled by a smell of tobacco and aromas.
It is considered, that it is basic meaning of aromas. However aromas were needed not for room aromatization originally. Since olden days it was considered, that man’s vital forces depend on breath and an air, which man breathes in, gets deep into his body. And it bears certain information in a form of smell. Purpose of aromas is to bear force and health in people’s organisms and prevent a penetration of evil spirits. That’s why in ancient East’s traditions during a wedding a bride’s head and face were closed with a shawl. They thought that through a nose and a mouth evil spirits can penetrate in her body and brought discord into young family.
One of ancient substances, which were used as aromas, was incense. In Egypt people burnt incense for god Ra greetings at sunrise.
Many ancients burnt fires with smelling types of trees or threw a handful of flavored powder, received from grasses, into a fire before to give prayers to their gods. In Ancient Babylon in 5-6 century aromas were a part of a prayer. Greeks considered that aromas can frighten off evil spirits, and the Catholic Church uses aromas to our time. Ancient Chinese used aromas for dialogue with spirits. They created a thick smoke with special grasses and through this smoke communicated with spirits. In Japan aromatic sticks were used to mark a time.
When there wasn’t a medicine as a science, people relied in their health on gods and grasses. Therefore smells were accompanied people during all their life. Aromatic grasses were classified by their healing power and people chose them to certain cases. Aromas used during delivery a baby, for maintenance of beauty, good spirits and a youth.
